What does it mean to say that a data point has a residual of -1? A. The point lies directly on the regression line. B. The point lies 1 unit below the regression line. C. The predicted value for that point is -1. D. The point lies 1 unit above the regression line.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe it is B.

OpenStudy (lilkg77):

how do u know @TheBallisticOne

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If i remember residuals correctly, i believe for every unit it is one extra unit above the line and for every negative unit it is one extra unit below the line

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Your best bet would be to look up "residual" and ensure that you know and understand the vocabulary involved. A residual is the difference between an actual measurement and the value for that same x (input) predicted by the regression line. I challenge you to look this up and determine which comes first: actual value or predicted value. Is the residual "predicted value less actual value" or "actual value less predicted value?"

OpenStudy (mathmale):

It's important to remember that "residuals" have to do with regression lines.
