A student wants to report on the number of meals his friends buy each week. The collected data are below: 4 19 3 3 2 3 2 4 Which measure of center is most appropriate for this situation and what is its value? Mean; 3 Mean; 5 Median; 3 Median; 5

@LynFran

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Check this out: "If it is skewed to one side then the best measure is the median. The measure of spread should go along with the measure fo central tendency you use. So with median you would use the coefficient of variation. If the distribution is symmetrical, the mean is the best measure of central tendency and you will want to use the standard deviation with the mean." -- Yahoo Answers

what do you know about "Mean of a given data" @HelpThisPanda007

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Since this data is more towards the numbers 2 - 4 and you have one outlier (19), it is skewed to one side. Therefore, it would be most appropriate to find the median.

@calculusxy Yahoo Answers...

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

@HelpThisPanda007 Did you understand what the post from Yahoo Answers said and if you did then what would be the answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but why YAHOO?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its pointless...

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Then you can find your source and use it if you like.

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

If you look then you will find about the same answer provided in Yahoo Answers.

OpenStudy (denonakavro):

Because there is 19, which is a huge outlier, we would like to use the mean for this situation. Now find the mean by adding all the values up and dividind by the amount of number. So: 4+ 19+ 3+ 3+ 2+ 3+ 2+ 4=40 now divide by 8 40/8 =5 The mean is 5 and this should be the most appropriate measure

OpenStudy (denonakavro):

To make sure you got it lets look at the other options. Because the mean is 5, we can automatically say that the choice with mean 3 is wrong Now lets find the median:(put the numbers in ascending order) 2,2,3,3,(3),4,4,19 As you can see the number in the middle is 3 (with the parenthesis), that is your median Now you know that the answer cannot also be median of 5 So your mean is 5 and your median is 3, one of these is your answer Even though they are both correct, you are looking for the most accurate measure. There is 19 in the list which is significantly different than the others, so it is an extreme outlier. That is why we would go with mean 5 as a more accurate measure.
