Imagine someone being haunted by a feeling that has no remedy, a feeling that keeps them closed away from the rest of the world, or a feeling that bares of relief; the feeling of suicide. By the end of my speech approximately seven people would’ve committed suicide… and a mere 140 others would’ve attempted to do so. The feeling of suicide is the perception that consistently provokes death as the way to be relieved, it provokes death as an escape. Envision a person taking their very last breath as nothing but bleak memories of their past surge through their mind; that is the feeling of suicide. But, even after their death, there may still never be a relief. Their parents, what about them? Would they have relief? Or their friends, their teachers, their poor sibling, and even the people that have hurt them emotionally, no one would be relieved. Only the victim has control over the feeling, however, there’s no way they could ever do it by themselves. They’d need to be treated with care, untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide. The right treatment at the right time will lead to the realization that suicide is not the solution to escaping a sad reality. To begin with, according to the World Health Organization, there is one death caused by suicide every 40 seconds and for every one death, there is an estimate of about 20 attempts. Calculated correctly, this equals over 2000 deaths lost to suicide every single day. With even more calculation, that’s over one million suicides every year. Many assume that homicide swallows and takes away a big fraction of deaths worldwide… it does, but not nearly as much as suicide does. The Suicide Awareness Voices of Education organization states that suicide is the 10th leading cause for death, but homicide is ranked 17th—now taking someone’s own life is far more popular than someone else doing it for them; it’s hard to process that fact. In spite of all the statistics, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services confirms that people who suffered from mental disorders such as depression, schizophrenia or alcoholism make up at least 90% of all people who commit suicide. The death of a loved one, a divorce, physical or sexual abuse, alcohol or drug abuse, lack of acceptance in society and bullying—all these experiences can all lead to depression. But, depression sounds like a simple word and everyone seems to know exactly what it means. However it’s so much more, it’s the result of countless unwanted thoughts piling on top of each other, only weighing a person down. It’s an experience that pushes them so far down, and maybe one day, they’d reach rock bottom. It’s like a thousand people drowning, but they’re the only one suffocating. Major psychiatric illnesses also play a big part in many pathways to suicide; other than depression, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia diagnosed patients walk a pretty rough road. A Bipolar disorder is constant switching of moods, one minute someone could be extremely happy, then the next, throbbing with sadness. Schizophrenia is something so unimaginably painful to the mind, it’s an illness that plays with the mind to make it almost impossible to sort out what’s real and what isn’t. As a result of all these facts, it’s difficult to conjure up an idea that there could ever be a stop to suicide worldwide. Sometimes it’s easier to see the warning signs and other times it’s harder, either way, we can always help. Help if someone is spending more time away from friends and family, showing signs of clinical depression, expressing lack of interest in activities, or even showing drastic change in weight, energy and appetite…help if someone is considering suicide. There is the Kids Help Phone, of which a youth suffering from suicidal thoughts is able to dial the number 1-800-668-6868 to get guidance from professionals. Finding a therapist or support group is a great way to find like-minded people and get assistance at a favourable pace. There are numerous ways to help someone realize suicide is not the solution to escaping a sad reality. People considering suicide do not want to end their lives, they want to end the pain. However, it’s hard to come to this understanding when is life is the pain. Depression is not an illness where you could take a little pill, and the next day, you’d be free. The cure for depression takes time, it takes patience but most importantly it takes the support from loved ones. To make the feeling of suicide vanish, it takes many realizations, too. The realization of the cause and that life is not a film— there’s no need to end it.
