RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

What would it mean to have a "theory of atoms?" What would you have to do to develop a theory of atoms? What kind of evidence would convince you that all matter is really made up of collections of tiny particles? @sweetburger @MissSmartiez

Well I don't really know the answer to the first two questions, but here's some evidence for the existence of atoms. Let's say you scoop up some water from the ocean. Upon closer inspection you conclude that there is half as much oxygen in the water as hydrogen. You continue to scoop different amounts of water and keep coming to that same conclusion. The only thing that could explain why this is is that each molecule of water is made with 2 atoms of hydrogen, and one atom of oxygen.

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

chemistry and physics, atomic theory is a theory of the nature of matter, which states that matter is composed of discrete units called atoms. as an answer to the first one maybe?

OpenStudy (kyanthedoodle):

Yes, that seems right.
