Nazi Scientists Use Concentration Camp Victims in Medical and Military Research Josef Mengele carried out his notorious experiments at the Auschwitz extermination camp in Poland. Not content with simply exterminating Jews and others declared to be undesirables, Nazi scientists also used Jewish victims for gruesome medical experiments. The most notorious of these scientists was Joseph Mengele, who performed genetic research on Jewish prionsers in order to supposedly improve the Aryan "race." Mengele was especially focused on twins, experimenting on 3,000 of them, most of them young children. Fewer than 200 survived. Mengele escaped after the war and was never brought to justice. Other Nazi experiments were designed to help German soldiers survive combat. Nazi doctors conducted freezing tests to research hypothermia by forcing Jewish victims to sit in tubs of ice water until they died of exposure. They also placed Jews in pressure chambers to determine what altitude would prove fatal for German pilots.
