what were the negatives of being a noble in medieval times?
" Advantages: wealth and power privilege (despite often breaking the law, medeival nobles tended not to get executed - they generally received pardons) better health (though only relative to the common people) easier living (not constantly required to do physical labour) Assured future (just as it was hard to rise from the commonalty to the nobility, is was hard to loose noble rank without also loosing life. Loss of social position would happen over generations, not over a lifetime) Disadvantages: The dangers of high politics - choosing the wrong side in local and national power struggles could be fatal. Feudal Incidents - medieval land ownership was complicated, and involve surprise taxes - such as the money due whenever land was inherited. Land wars - disputes over land were common. They could lead to violence and court cases lasting many years. Obligations - medieval aristrocrats were warrior aristocrats. They were expected to support the King in times of war, either with money, or by raising troops and fighting in person. Civil War - in a dispute over who should be king, nobles with *have* to choose a side. Making the wrong choice could easily be fatal. Even making the right choice would probably lead a high ranking medieval noble to support his choice on the battle field, and risk death like everyone else. There is a record of nobles killed at the Battle of Towton, in the 15thC. There are a lot of names on it, from Lords all the way down to knights, squires and gentlemen. Family - medieval nobles had to manage their families with an eye to choosing the best marriages (for politics, and money, and with an eye to how the family's lands would end up being divided), fostering out their children to the right people, choosing how their children should be educated (should they be warrior aristocrats and politicians, should they go to London, to learn the law and take up positions in the royal administration, should they go to the church, and aim to become Bishops and high clergy?), and always looking towards the future - the continuation of the family line. Families could be trouble too... children could end up fighting over the family lands. Deaths could ruin plans for how lands were to be divided on the deaths of parents.
