RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

How many electrons does the isotope oxygen-18 have? 6 8 10 18 @MissSmartiez

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

c right?

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

no no its b

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

isotopes are always 8.

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

E

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

so... now i confused myself

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

sorry it cut my chat off...

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

Either 8 or 10,

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

I am thinking 8, this is confusing me also.

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

isotopes always stay the same. so i know isotopes are 8

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

but its electrons...

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

https://quizlet.com/50426812/chapter-4-study-guide-flash-cards Exactly, that is why I think it is 8,

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

true! You seem to know more than I XD

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

ohhhhh

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

" How many neutrons are in oxygen-18? You need a periodic table to answer this question. 10 18 is the mass number which is protons and neutrons together. The atomic number of oxygen (8) indicates how many protons there are. 18 minus 8 gives 10 neutrons. " This was on the link

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

so its 10.

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

Oh geez, then another thing says it has 8 protons, 10 electrons and 8 neutrons.

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Yea isotopes have identical electron configurations as the "normal" most abundant isotope that appears on the periodic table.

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

I wonder if sweet burger can help

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

So Oxygen-18 has the same number of electrons as Oxygen-16

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

:D ok! Writing this down,

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

uhhh....im lost guys

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Oxygen-16 being the isotope that appears on the periodic table.

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Ok ill try to explain it, but what part is confusing you.

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

lol. yes. everything. I know that the isotope is 8. but everything else is kinda....confusing...

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

aaand this is why i double check my answers

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Ok Oxygen-16 is the isotope that appears on the periodic table. It has 8 protons and 8 neutrons. The number of protons and the number of neutrons form the number after Oxygen which is Oxygen-16. Oxygen-16 also has 8 electrons which balances the 8 protons to form a neutral charge. Now when considering Oxygen-18. We know that protons do not change in isotopes or the charge of the atom would change, therefore the neutrons must change. The number of neutrons is 10 and the number of protons is 8. This form the the number after the oxygen which is Oxygen-18. Because Oxygen-18 still has 8 protons it still needs to have its charge be neutralized by the presence of 8 electrons. Therefore the number of electrons in Oxygen-18 is 8.

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

Exactly, I am sticking around too, since I was confused.. I only knew that the isotopes are 8.

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

ohh

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

#facepalming

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

^ xD

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

this is also why i need sweetburger in my life

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

So it makes sense :D.

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

Let me join in.

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

* face palms * I feel odd since I am the youngest. XD. (Yes it does)

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

thaaank youuu

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

Ditto, sweet burger.

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

Thanks :)

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Np glad to help out :D
