Can someone please show me the steps to this question? Please The number of students on the football team is 2 more than 3 times the number of students on the basketball team. If the basketball team has y students, write a variable expression for the number of students on the football team.

OpenStudy (kdr1308):

\[(y \times 3) + 2\]

OpenStudy (abbycross167):

can you please show me the steps?

OpenStudy (kdr1308):

"The number of students on the football team is 2 more than 3 times the number of students on the basketball team." Well, lets break it down. We know the number of basketball players is going to be known as the base "y". If there are 3 times more we know to do (y x 3). So --> we also have the additional "two more" aka +2 in my equation. Once I put it together, I'll end up with (y x 3) + 2. Understood? or do i need to narrow it down even more?

OpenStudy (abbycross167):

Would you mind putting the steps vertically? I understand them better that way.... I'm just having a hard time reading them

OpenStudy (kdr1308):

Yes, of course! I'll do it in a bit, because I'm about to have a game, but when I get home, I'll be right on it.
