Identify five examples of the use of logos, ethos, and pathos in the speech. First, cite specific lines from the speech. Then, indicate whether the lines are an example of logos, ethos, or pathos. Finally, explain your choice as well as the impact the lines are intended to have on the audience. http://dubois.fas.harvard.edu/sites/all/files/JFK%20Civil%20Rights%20Speech%20June%2011,%201963.pdf

I am sorry but I don't know this but I can find someone who can

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please ? I just need help to get started at least.

OpenStudy (flower2468):

@HannahA should be able to help

OpenStudy (hannaha):

Let me try here ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you SO much !!

OpenStudy (hannaha):

Alrighty, to start with here's a couple definitions :) let me read through the speech tho Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader. Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response. Logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason.

OpenStudy (hannaha):

That order called for the admission of two clearly qualified young Alabama residents who happened to have been born Negro. That they were admitted peacefully on the campus is due in good measure to the conduct of the students of the University of Alabama, who met their responsibilities in a constructive way. This is an example of Ethos. It shows that these "Negros" were, in fact, very capable, helpful students doing their American job.

OpenStudy (hannaha):

I hope that every American, regardless of where he lives, will stop and examine his conscience about this and other related incidents. This Nation was founded by men of many nations and backgrounds. It was founded on the principle that all men are created equal, and that the rights of every man are diminished when the rights of one man are threatened. An example of Pathos, this appeals to the emotions by saying that these men are men of good character, who are being hurt by these rights being diminished.

OpenStudy (hannaha):

In short, every American ought to have the right to be treated as he would wish to be treated, as one would wish his children to be treated. But this is not the case ANother example of pathos

OpenStudy (hannaha):

The Negro baby born in America today, regardless of the section of the State in which he is born, has about one-half as much chance of completing a high school as a white baby born in the same place on the same day, one-third as much chance of completing college, one-third as much chance of becoming a professional man, twice as much chance of becoming unemployed, about one-seventh as much chance of earning $10,000 a year, a life expectancy which is 7 years shorter, and the prospects of earning only half as much. this could be an example of logos

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you tell me how you pick the statements please ? Because i think that's my biggest problem is not really knowing how to pick the lines to use.

OpenStudy (hannaha):

Okay. The lines you want to pick by reading through them and trying to decide whether they are logical, emotion-related (trying to make you feel something) or ethical (trying to prove somebody's good character or ethic)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

does ethic basically means character ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@HannahA Do you mind giving me one more i jus can't pick the lines. If you could pick the lines and ill try to figure out if its logos, pathos or ethos and why on my own so that i ca see if i understand this yet please ? If you don't want to that's completely okay !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Actually I choose these : The heart of the question is whether all Americans are to be afforded equal rights and equal opportunities, whether we are going to treat our fellow Americans as we want to be treated. If an American, because his skin is dark, cannot eat lunch in a restaurant open to the public, if he cannot send his children to the best public school available, if he cannot vote for the public officials who will represent him, if, in short, he cannot enjoy the full and free life which all of us want, then who among us would be content to have the color of his skin changed and stand in his place? Is this pathos ? If so i think i can explain why, I just want to be sure. @HannahA

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mythorius Just the very last thing i commented is what i need.

OpenStudy (mythorius):

Looks like it's pathos. Not 100% sure though. its been a couple months but im pretty sure that's pathos.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay awesome, thank you. as long as someone else agrees i feel confident lol

OpenStudy (hannaha):

Yes indeed this is pathos sorry about the wait :) very good!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yay thank you !! @HannahA

OpenStudy (hannaha):

sure :)
