At the time of the construction of the Erie Canal the canal system of England was easily studied and contemporary in terms of 'modernization' - lock systems and so forth. Its efficacy was somewhat short-lived in that railroad systems came 'on-line' shortly after the completion of the Erie Canal. One competitor to the canal had an eerily similar name: Erie Railroad Company. There were canals under construction at about the same time in Canada. One - the Trent-Severn system (may have different name[s]) makes use of 'lift locks'. The largest lift lock is located in Peterborough, Ontario.
