whats your question?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
2x^2-12xy-32y^2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I'm trying to find the gcf and simplify
The farthest I've gotten is this.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
2(x^2-6xy-16y^2)

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):
can it be simplified more?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I know it can, I just can't figure out how
I think you split it up somehow.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
It's not a perfect square.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I am completely stuck.
OpenStudy (photon336):
You can factor out a 2 for starters.
2x^2-12xy-32y^2

I knew that.
OpenStudy (photon336):
2(x^{2}-6xy-16y^{2})
OpenStudy (photon336):
Look at the last number -16y^{2}
what two numbers when added together that are factors of -16 will result in -6 ?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
-8 and 2
OpenStudy (photon336):
2((x -8 )(x+2))
because when we foil this it will give us
x^{2}+2x-8x -16 ~ x^{2}-6x-16

OpenStudy (photon336):
now we just need to focus on the y terms now
OpenStudy (anonymous):
I was missing that one step, I think I have it now.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
2(x - 8y)(x + 2y)
OpenStudy (photon336):
Yep and we foil it
2(x +2y )(x-8y )
x^{2}-8xy+2xy-16y^{2}
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Thanks!

Well, and there you have it. the most important part of this is to look at the sign of the last term and ask yourself what factors of the last term when added together will result in the middle term.
