Today we call it “Jacksonian Democracy”, but at the time Andrew Jackson’s use of the presidential veto and executive orders was pretty unprecedented. People were shocked to see the chief executive actually thwart the will of the Legislature; some saw it as tyranny, while others saw it as a common man using his power to stand up for ordinary Americans. Pick a modern-day political event wherein a president used an executive order or veto (or otherwise stood against the Congress) and compare and contrast that modern-day event to Andrew Jackson’s use of executive power.
