What is the value of 3x2 - 5xy + 5y2 for x = -6 and y = 2?

OpenStudy (photon336):

@fany123 wherever you see x you plug in -6 and y = 2

OpenStudy (photon336):

\[3(-6)^{2}+5(-6)(2)+5(2)^2 = ? \]

OpenStudy (photon336):

does this make sense?

OpenStudy (calculusxy):

Just to point out a common mistake that people tend to make with these problems, and it is that they don't evaluate the exponents first. Make sure to evaluate the exponents first and then start doing the remaining operations in order according to PEMDAS.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I strongly agree with calculusxy. Please, be careful if you cut and paste an equation. You apparently did that with 3x2 - 5xy + 5y2, which does not properly indicate exponentiation. Should be 3x^2 - 5xy + 5y^2, or \[3x^2 - 5xy + 5y^2\]
