what is the difference between an intersection and a union?
an intersection means and and a union means or
Please look up both terms on the 'Net. Then we can discuss them individually and contrast them.
so an intersection is like a combination of a set of numbers, right?
or 2 sets of numbers?
If you're asking me, arby-j, then I doubt y ou've looked up these terms as I've asked you to do so. look up "union of a set." then look up "intersection of a set"

Very good diagrams. We'll discuss verbally what union and intersection mean. But first, arbyj, please look up both terms yourself and share the basics of what y ou find.
What verbal description do you find of a "union of two sets?"
i looked up the definition of intersection first, and i'm trying to understand it
before i get to union
fine, look up "intersecton" of 2 sets first.
before i get to union
A=(1,2,3),B=(0,5,1)
So, what would be the intersection of sets A and B?
First, explain what "intersection" means, in your own words.
The intersection of two sets of numbers is ...... ?
what exactly are you trying to know
is it like a combination?
i know intersection is and the union is or but what is the difference other than that?
No, it's not. If I step on your toe, the overlap of our shoes would be an "intersection." better go back and do a bit more reading on"intersection."
"combination" is not the right word here. "intersection" refers to any elements that the 2 sets have in common. Type out the 2 sets again: A: B: What element have they in common?
A=(1,2,3), B=(0,5,1) 1
I do expect you to be able to explain in your own words what the intersection of 2 sets means and what the union of 2 sets means. Right. the intersection is {1}. What about the union?
The only overlap of A and B is {1} . Note the word "overlap." Were I to step on your toe with my toe, the "intersection would be the small part of my sole that touches the top of your shoe.
so the union would be putting the numbers together, right? @mathmale
We need to use careful wording here. We're not "putting the numbers together," but rather are looking for any number or number that is in one of the sets or the other or both. What are A and B again? Take all of the elements of A and all of the elements of B (but no duplicates) and write a new set. That new set will be the "union" of A and B.
uh A=(1,2,3) B=(0,5,1)
@mathmale
The union of A and B is the set of all members of both sets, but NO duplicates, please. Try it. Write out the members of set A and then the members of set B. Eliminate any duplicates. What's left is the union of sets A and B.
okay i think i understand union now, thanks :)
