A recipe will make 10 pancakes that are 8 inches in diameter. If you decide to make 4 inch diameter pancakes, how many of the smaller pancakes would this recipe make?

OpenStudy (justdoublechecking):

10 * 2 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

20

OpenStudy (justdoublechecking):

There's your answer! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i asked the teacher he said no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

apparently i think its something with pi

OpenStudy (justdoublechecking):

Then I'm not sure... Sorry. I would think that that would be the answer...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can u help me at least in one of them

OpenStudy (justdoublechecking):

Sorry... I'm not good at this kind of thing... Good luck though.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and its okay

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

The answer is not 20. What matters is how much smaller is the area of a 4-inch pancake than an 8-inch pancake. A 4-inch pancake does not have half the area of an 8-inch pancake.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Here are the steps to get the correct answer. 1. Use the formula for the area of a circle and find the area of an 8-inch diameter pancake. 2. Then multiply that area by 10. That gives you the total area of 10 8-inch diameter pancakes. 3. Now use the formula for the area of a circle again, and find the area of a 4-inch diameter pancake. 4. Divide the total area of 10-inch diameter pancakes from step 2 by the area of one 4-inch diameter pancake from step 3. That is the number of 4-inch diameter pancakes that can be made.

Thank you!

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Here is a figure to show what I wrote above. The large circle represents a pancake with a diameter of 8 inches. Each small circle inside has a diameter half the size of the larger circle. That means that each small circle represents a 4-inch diameter pancake. Do you see how the total area of the two small circles fit inside the large circle with a lot of area to spare? That shows that the area of one 4-inch diameter pancake is much less than half the area of one 8-inch diameter pancake.

You're welcome.

Thank you a lot!

You're welcome.
