Not exactly sure what this is referring to, but here is my guess. I also don't really understand what your book is saying to much either. But I think that if you only have one form of loyalty you aren't open to other options and that can harm you if you aren't going to be flexible in your loyalties.

Because if you aren't flexible with the way you are and with your loyalties then you can have issues. On your second attachment in the second paragraph it starts to explain how these loyalties can conflict through ethical problems.

IS the answer? We may get closer to resolving these conflicts if we recall a famous statement of loyalty - naval commander Stephen Decatur's toast, "Our country, right or wrong"
