OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Which came first Geometry or Arithmetic?

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

That is like saying, which came first, integrals or derivatives?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

I believe, historically integrals came first to calculate areas. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_calculus

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

mehhh... depends on how one chooses to define an integral

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

I am defining it "historically." :-)

OpenStudy (inkyvoyd):

no, you are utillizing a wikipedian author's definition of "historically". Careful.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

True dat pal.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say Geometry because it is (should be?) less abstract. Some examples I am thinking of: - counting to 3 - observe a line - do subtraction - draw a circle

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

geometry = at least as old as greek knowledge. so defo over 2,000 years ago albebra = Arabic, Omar Khayyam about 1,000 years ago, but probably a lot older yet still younger than Euclid putting it all together with Cartesian stuff took a lot longer still

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

if you are talking in generals then arithmetic as old as*es who use money to sell or buy stuff or uses as define age or simple counting used it...all used basic stuff as adding+ subtracting but if you are talking about proving methods then geometry came first for more complicated stuff still tricky question as mainly the using of arithmetic goes for counting which is way basic to be proved (only in high advanced abstract algebra which mainly used the idea of Euclid axiom)

interesting stuff. I read somewhere that the Egyptians used fractions - except for a few fractions , each fraction had just the number 1 in the numerator! So that 5/21 would be written as 1/7 + 1/21+ 1/21 ! Imagine doing arithmetic in egyptian fractions!!

OpenStudy (misssmartiez):

^ Maybe Geometry, since ancient lands uses geometry figures and such to create their buildings and such; not sure!
