I need help finding the lateral area for a triangular prism the equation: first they used the Pythagorean theorem to get a which becomes a = rad 52 or 2 rad 13 then to find the front face they used the formula A = (w)(h) = 2 rad 13 times = 16 rad 13 to find the left face they used the formula A = (d)(h) = 4 times 8 = 32 to find the back face they used the formula A = (d)(h) = 6 times 8 = 48 to find the lateral area they used the formula: Lateral area = front face area + left face area + back face area Lateral area = 16 rad 3 + 32 + 48 Lateral area = 80 + 16 rad 3
@jim_thompson5910
I dont know why they used 4 when on the picture it shows 3
the work you have posted is way too complicated and it's incorrect focus on one rectangular panel. It's 3 by 6, so it has area 6*3 = 18 square inches since the triangles are equilateral, this means all panels are congruent, so we have 3*18 = 54 square inches of lateral surface area
ok
but it said that the answer was correct
that was why I was confused
Can I see a screenshot of the full problem?
that was kinda all and then I had to choose an answer
please post a screenshot if you can
how do I do that?
are you on a windows machine? or a mac?
I have a google chrome laptop
go here https://support.google.com/chromebook/answer/183101?source=gsearch&hl=en scroll down to where it says `Take a screenshot of your current page` or `Take a partial screenshot`
doing that will either make you save the image, or it will put it in your clipboard if nothing seems to happen, try to go to a paint program and paste the image in
ok
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JnKCiavxfVvA0BE-0kswoGhintEPUv8gyInMoN2mj9M/edit
does that work?
let me try
it's showing me this (see attached)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JnKCiavxfVvA0BE-0kswoGhintEPUv8gyInMoN2mj9M/edit
if you can, save it as a jpg or png, then attach it to open study
see if that is better
ok let me try
ok I requested access
it'll probably notify you via email
let me know if it went through or not
there?
I'm there now. Thanks
yeah just as I thought, it's `54 sq ft` though they made an error with the tick marks. The double tick marks mean "inches" not "feet".
ok
so you multiplied 6 and 3 and then multiplied that by 3?
area of one panel = 6*3 = 18 area of all three panels combined = 3*(one panel area) = 3*18 = 54
ok thanks so much again you are a lifesaver
you're welcome
is there a shorter way to find the total surface area?
@jim_thompson5910
what is the height of the triangle?
3?
|dw:1458611162966:dw|
3 is not the height
I want the length of this segment |dw:1458611205380:dw|
the segment cuts the side of 3 in half to get 3/2 or 1.5 |dw:1458611245849:dw|
