Please help, will fan & medal! If f(x) = x+2 and g(x) = 2x-5 find f[g(4)]

OpenStudy (alexishope47):

Combine the equations to get f(g(x))= (2x-5)+2 Then, substitute x for 4.

OpenStudy (knov):

imagine it output and input. x is an input for you. g(4) here 4 is input for you

OpenStudy (knov):

and output here is g(4)=2*4-5

OpenStudy (alexishope47):

All that f(g(x)) means is that the equation for g(x) is being used as a replacement for the x value in the f(x).

OpenStudy (alexishope47):

And when there is a number there it means that x will equal that number.

OpenStudy (knov):

f[g(4)] you can locate the input here

OpenStudy (hahawowoh):

So the equation I have is f(g(4)) = (2x-5)+2

OpenStudy (alexishope47):

YES! well if you have the 4 there then that mean you just have to plug the 4 in as a replacement of x so it looks like f(g(4))=(2(4)-5))+2

OpenStudy (hahawowoh):

Yay!! So is that the answer?

OpenStudy (alexishope47):

Well you can simplify now.2 times 4 is 8. Minus 5 is 3. Plus 2 is 5. So the answer is 5.

OpenStudy (hahawowoh):

Thank you so much!!!

OpenStudy (alexishope47):

Absolutely! Glad to be of assistance!
