ok it turns out that a 30-60-90 triangle is a special triangle where the side lengths form the ratio shown in this image here http://hotmath.com/hotmath_help/topics/30-60-90-triangles/triangle1.gif x is the short leg 2x is the hypotenuse (in other words, the hypotenuse is twice as long as the short leg) x*sqrt(3) is the long leg
