Do you know how to find the area of a circle?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
A=πr^2?
OpenStudy (freckles):
cool stuff
OpenStudy (freckles):
you have two circles here
find the area of both

OpenStudy (freckles):
the area of the circle with radius 18 yd is ?
the area of the circle with radius 15 yd is?
OpenStudy (freckles):
Taking that bigger area and subtracting that smaller area will give you the area of the path there.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
area of the circle with 15 yd radius = 804
area of the circle with 18 yd radius = 1018
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so, 1018 - 804 = 214
OpenStudy (anonymous):
214 is the area of the path, right?

OpenStudy (freckles):
I think something is wrong with your first area
OpenStudy (freckles):
the 1018 checks out
OpenStudy (freckles):
but the 804 doesn't
OpenStudy (anonymous):
my bad, it's 707!
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so subtracting them, it's 311.

ok sounds cool
OpenStudy (freckles):
now we want to see how many bags we will need to fill that 311 yd^2 in
OpenStudy (anonymous):
how do i do that?
OpenStudy (freckles):
we want to see many bags we will need
so we are going to divide by 311 by 4
and round up since we will need to cover that fractional part with a bag even if we don't use the full bag
OpenStudy (anonymous):
8 bags?

so that's my answer?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i'm going to need more help with a few questions, could you possibly help me?
OpenStudy (freckles):
yep you will need 78 bags of sand to cover that path
77 will almost do it but you would have a little part of the path that won't get covered
so that is why we need 78
