In both Australia and New Zealand, the governor-general has a large amount of official authority, including the right to appoint many officials. Why is the governor-general not considered to be the most powerful position in either of these countries? The governor-general's role is greatly controlled by the king or queen. A new governor-general is elected each year, so each has little control. The governor-general's role is mostly ceremonial with little real power. There are several governor-generals who manage to balance each other.
