OpenStudy (janu16):
what equation
OpenStudy (ltrout):
\[\sqrt{x+10}^{-9} = -7\]
OpenStudy (janu16):
are you solving for x?
OpenStudy (ltrout):
Yes. The choices for answers are: -6, 4, 14, -8.
OpenStudy (maddy1251):
I might be able to help

wait is that -9?
OpenStudy (janu16):
up there?
OpenStudy (ltrout):
Yes
OpenStudy (maddy1251):
Okay. So, you have the -9 in the square root of the equation, that seems to be the tricky part
OpenStudy (maddy1251):
Take that and add it to -7 and tell me what you get

Take the -9 and add it to -7?
OpenStudy (maddy1251):
yes --> -7 + 9 =
OpenStudy (ltrout):
So it would be 2?
OpenStudy (maddy1251):
Yes! excellent. So now we have \[\sqrt{x+10} = 2\]
Right?
OpenStudy (ltrout):
Yes

Okay, so what is the opposite of a square root?
OpenStudy (maddy1251):
such as, opposite of multiply is divide
OpenStudy (ltrout):
The square? How 81 is the square and the squareroot is 9?
OpenStudy (maddy1251):
No. Okay, so you have the square root of x + 10 = 2
we want to do the OPPOSITE of square root --- > this is exponents, such as squaring! :) It will get rid of the radical.
OpenStudy (maddy1251):
So then we will have x + 10 = 2 ^ 2

This then turns into x + 10 = 4
OpenStudy (maddy1251):
Now, solve for x. :-)
OpenStudy (ltrout):
Ohhh. Okay I get it now! So -6?
OpenStudy (maddy1251):
Yes!
OpenStudy (ltrout):
Alright, do you think you could help on another one? :)
