OpenStudy (photon336):

Well we need to understand the situation going on at the time first. without context first It will be difficult to write anything.

emmagrace231 (emmagrace231):

ok. this is the website they gave me to use to get info from http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/what.htm

OpenStudy (photon336):

I'm pretty sure we're talking about the period from the 1870s onward. Remember after the civi war, the slaves were granted their freedom and given the right to vote. So imagine your entire life being owned by someone else in complete servitude and then someone coming along and saying HEY you're free now. Imagine also being given the right to vote. Abraham Lincoln, before he was assassinated advocated for a policy of quick integration of the southern states back into the union. But don't forget. the south was utterly devastated by the war and don't forget their economy was largely agrarian cash crops, worked on by slaves. so now after gaining their freedom the slaves now had to be paid wages. you can imagine that they would be competing with southern workers for jobs and such. don't forget also they would have been a significant voting force too. From the description, of the laws on the page you sent it seems that the south created these laws to keep blacks as close to slave status as possible. so maybe you could talk about this as aspect too.

OpenStudy (photon336):

These laws were in a way legitimized by the supreme court in 1896 the case of Plessy vs ferguson where they argued in favor for segregation under the premise of separate yet equal. the former slave would be not that difficult to describe you could talk about the civil war and gaining freedom and what your life was like etc. after knowing what the laws were like, and based on the description I gave, you could easily paint a picture for the others.

OpenStudy (photon336):

FYI related but somewhat unrelated there's a book I read called 1877 which talks about a-lot of this stuff. long story short, the 1870s were a time of reconstruction of the south, followed by massive construction in railroads/industry. another thing business became extremely powerful people's wages went down too. so the point of these laws is really to undermine political/economic gains former slaves won during the civil war.

OpenStudy (photon336):

that's really the gist of it.

emmagrace231 (emmagrace231):

•_• I don't know what to do, or how to be.
