rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

What do you call molten rock before it has erupted?

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

is it magma?

ILovePuppiesLol (ilovepuppieslol):

http://cmex.ihmc.us/data/catalog/volcanismonmars/moltenrock.html Molten rock below the surface of the Earth that rises in volcanic vents is known as magma, but after it erupts from a volcano it is called lava. Originating many tens of miles beneath the ground, the ascending magma commonly contains some crystals, fragments of surrounding (unmelted) rocks, and dissolved gases, but it is primarily a liquid composed principally of oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron, magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium, titanium, and manganese. Magmas also contain many other chemical elements in trace quantities. The image shows a lava flow heading toward the ocean (the contact with water is visible in the farground where vapor is generated) during the eruption of Kilauea in november 1986. The lava started roofing, forming a lava tube. The red molten rock is seen flowing below the protection of the lava roof.
