OpenStudy (heyyyyitsholly):

Explain how antibiotics are able to target the bacteria cells but not the healthy cells within your body.

OpenStudy (heyyyyitsholly):

OpenStudy (dani_rose):

ok lol Give me a sec

OpenStudy (heyyyyitsholly):

Okay

OpenStudy (dani_rose):

Antibiotics are able to target the bacteria cells but not the healthy cells in your body because the bacterial cells build up walls of a macromolecule called peptidoglycan, itself made up of amino sugars and short peptides. Human cells do not make or need peptidoglycan. Antibiotics target those walls and cause them to become fragile and frail.
