B
i am not familiar with the story...sorry
The three of us had planned to meet at lunch. Hazel and I were the first to spot each other. We grabbed our trays of food and found an empty table in the corner. Tina, however, didn't join us until the meal was nearly over. "You almost missed lunch," I said as she plopped down. "I'll try harder next time," she joked, poking at the questionable meat on her plate. "I think they're hot dogs," Hazel offered. "Hot dogs are gross," Tina said frankly. "How come you're so late?" I asked. "Mr. Shudders made me stay after class. Apparently, that will teach me how to turn in my homework on time," she answered, rolling her eyes. "What he needs to do is find my mother a full-time nanny."
my guess...and its just a guess...is A. you might want to wait for another opinion.
"'I'll try harder next time,' she joked..." That is apparently a trying attempt, if you get what I mean. The line says "...she joked," but that doesn't mean she's really joking. A pun is a humorous use of similar words or phrases to suggest different meanings. The line that says, "'Hot dogs are gross,' Tina said frankly..," is a pun because the word "frankly" could have two meanings. It could be interpreted literally with "frankly" just meaning "honestly" or "openly," or it could loosely be interpreted with "frankly" meaning "in the manner of a frankfurter (hot dog)." I'd say it is D, but you can wait for further responses.
I agree with @secret66 that the answer is 'D.' I say this because a hot dog is mentioned, and at the end of the sentence, the word 'frankly' is used. A frank is another term used to describe a hot dog.
It's D. Franks are another name for hotdogs.
