True or False. The sum of ✓4 and ✓5 is irrational.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know whether a decimal is irrational or not by the decimal answers I get in a calculator, like whether they terminate or not

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

Well first do square root of 4. Is that irrational or rational?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

rational right?

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

yes it's 2 and it ends there.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

sqrt5 however I believe is irrational because it continues on in the calculator.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but how many digits does it take for a decimal to be terminating/nonterminating

OpenStudy (anonymous):

after the decimal bc i cant tell in the calculator result

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

Hm that I don't know. But https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Square_root_of_5 says it's irrational.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how can we tell then :( haha guess I have to look them up on google everytime lol

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

I guess if it continues for the max number of digits in the calculator then it should be irrational. If you scroll down on that link there's an actual proof and methods of proving irrationality which I haven't learned yet.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhh ok thank you

OpenStudy (anthonyym):

no problem
