Celina had a rectangular tablecloth with dimensions x feet and 3 feet. She put lace along 4 feet of the edge of the tablecloth. An expression is shown below: (2x + 6) - 4 Part A: What does the expression represent? Part B: What does 2x + 6 represent? Part C: What does 2x represent?

@vishweshshrimali5

OpenStudy (arcticfoxzx87):

can i help

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

of course!!!

OpenStudy (arcticfoxzx87):

Part A: The expression represent the dimensions of the tablecloth

OpenStudy (arcticfoxzx87):

Im gonna break part b down for u okay

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

ok

OpenStudy (arcticfoxzx87):

So 2x+6 ok so 2x represents the X feet and 6 I guess is part of what makes the equation true but 2 and X are factors so that means to me that 2 is the factor and X is just a Variable that can be any number like 1.

OpenStudy (arcticfoxzx87):

2X Rpresents 2 represents the factor and x represents the variable

OpenStudy (arcticfoxzx87):

ok thats my answer i have to go bye

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

bye thanks

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

@mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

"Celina had a rectangular tablecloth with dimensions x feet and 3 feet. She put lace along 4 feet of the edge of the tablecloth." Could you write an expression for the perimeter of the original tablecloth?

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

would that be 2x+6?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes. Now Celina puts edging along 4 feet of her tablecloth. If that's the case, then what does (2x+6)-4 represent?

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

the perimeter of the tablecloth with the 4 ft. of lace

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Wouldn't it be, rather, the perimeter of the tablecloth that does NOT have 4 feet of lace attached?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

2x+6 is the full perimeter; (2x+6)-4 is "4 feet less than the full perimeter."

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

so then 2x + 6 is the perimeter INCLUDING the 4 ft. of lace?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

2x+6 is the perimeter of the tablecloth with NO lace attached. If you attach 4 ft. of lace, then the remainder of the perimeter is (2x+6)-4.

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

so then 2x + 6 is with the lace?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Without lace. Forgetting the lace for a moment, the perimeter is 2x+6. If you sew 4 feet of lace onto the tablecloth's perimeter, then 2x+6-4 of the edge of the tablecloth is bare, unfinished, without lace.

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

ooohhhh ok I understand now

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Very glad. Good luck! Buen suerte!

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

wait but what about the 2x

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

what does 2x represent?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Celina had a rectangular tablecloth with dimensions x feet and 3 feet. The perimeter of a rectangle is P=2L + 2W. Thus, if the Length is x, the Perimeter is P=2x + 6. You tell me: what does x represent? What does 2x represent? Why multiply x by 2?

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

Does it represents 2 sides of the tablecloth?

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

sorry of the table?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

The problem statement doesn't say whether it's the length that's x or that it's the width that's x. Let's just say that "x is one dimension of the table cloth, whereas 3 is the other, and thus the perimeter of the cloth is P = 2x + 2(3) = 2x + 6.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

so 2x would represent the length of either 2 sides of the cloth or 2 ends of the cloth.

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

sorry I didn't answer my internet stopped working

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

and ok I understand now. Thanks for helping!!!

OpenStudy (fairy733189):

do you think you can help me with one more or do you have to go?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Let's see what you have. One more.
