Question: how far is `-2.9` from zero on the number line? Answer: 2.9 units The absolute value of any number represents the distance that number is from zero. The distance is NEVER negative. Negative distance makes no sense Other examples |-7| = 7 |22| = 22 |-1/3| = 1/3

So basically, if the number on the inside of the absolute value brackets is negative, then flip it to positive. If the number is already positive, then the result is the same
