Question: how far is `-2.9` from zero on the number line?
Answer: 2.9 units
The absolute value of any number represents the distance that number is from zero. The distance is NEVER negative. Negative distance makes no sense
Other examples

|22| = 22
|-1/3| = 1/3

If the number is already positive, then the result is the same
