I do have a question though. So if I have
4(1+3)
Do I say...
Four times one plus three
OR
One plus three times four.
How do you write it so the reader knows where the parentheses are. Or does it not really matter?
sammixboo (sammixboo):
4 times one plus three I believe. It gets confusing when you get to the parenthesis
OpenStudy (mathstudent55):
How do you read n + 8? 8 added to a number
Then 3(n + 8) is: the product of 3, and 8 added to a number.
OpenStudy (dayakar):
three times of eight more than a number

Notice that I used a comma.
the product of 3, and 8 added to a number -----> 3(n + 8)
With no comma, it can be ambiguous:
the product of 3 and 8 added to a number ------> 3(n + 8)
or
the product of 3 and 8 added to a number ------> 3*8 + n
