medal and fan!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x + 2y = −10 3x − y = 12 x − 2y = −10 3x − y = 12 x + 2y = −10 3x + y = 12 x − 2y = −10 3x + y = 12

OpenStudy (photon336):

So you need to find what pair of equations those two are right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A) x + 2y = −10 3x − y = 12 b) x − 2y = −10 3x − y = 12 C) x + 2y = −10 3x + y = 12 D) x − 2y = −10 3x + y = 12

OpenStudy (photon336):

\[y_{1} = m_{1}(x)+b \] \[y_{2} = m_{2}(x)+b \] easy way to do this is to first find out what the y intercept is for each. that's the b value. so for each equation can you tell me where each one touches the y axis when x is zero?

OpenStudy (photon336):

so look at the graph and tell me at what value the first equation touches the y axis when x = 0 and the same for the second one

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0,-5 and 4,0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right?

OpenStudy (photon336):

okay yep so one is 0,-5 so look now what this one becomes \[y_{1} = (m_{1)}x-5 \] now we can find the slope so for that graph we can pick any two points we want and find the slope of this (0,-5) (-2,-4) do you know how to find the slope?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no not really

OpenStudy (photon336):

we use this formula to find the slope \[m = \frac{ y_{2}-y_{1} }{ x_{2}-x_{1} }\]

OpenStudy (photon336):

there's probably a faster-way to do this, you could probably just plug in the solution set into each equation. and see if it satisfies both. but I think this way is alright too.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay give me a sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im struggling

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

u wouldnt necessarily need the slope..u could just find the x and y intercepts

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 0,-5 and 4,0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nonononono never mind

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2,-6?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

x + 2y = -10 2y = - x - 10 y = - 1/2x - 5 so y int is (0,-5)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

x int can be found by subbing in 0 for y x + 2y = - 10 x + 2(0) = - 10 x = - 10 so for 1st eq...x int is (-10,0) and y int is (- 5,0)

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

now u would need to find x and y intercepts for each answer choice and see what matchesur graph
