OpenStudy (welshfella):
can you work out the mean first
mean = total of the numbers / 5
(5 because there is 5 numbers in the list)
OpenStudy (welshfella):
what do you get for the mean?
OpenStudy (k12awesomeness):
I did that and got 30

OpenStudy (welshfella):
Ok
now you work out the differences from the mean
30 - 20 = 10
30 - 25 = 5
30 - 30 = 0
can you do the last 2?
OpenStudy (k12awesomeness):
what 30-45 and 30-30 ?
OpenStudy (welshfella):
yes
OpenStudy (benlindquist):
30 - 45 and 30 - 30 =
OpenStudy (welshfella):
but as its an mean absolute deviation any negative value becomes positive

so 30-45 comes out to 15
OpenStudy (k12awesomeness):
30-45 = -15
OpenStudy (daniel2raw):
not negative
OpenStudy (k12awesomeness):
okay, then just 15
OpenStudy (benlindquist):
yes

now what?
OpenStudy (benlindquist):
do the next one
OpenStudy (benlindquist):
30 -30
OpenStudy (welshfella):
when you have completed the 5 calculations you add them up
dividing this total by then gives the MAD
OpenStudy (benlindquist):
=

OpenStudy (k12awesomeness):
it equals 30
OpenStudy (welshfella):
ok now finally divide this by 5 and you have the MAD
OpenStudy (k12awesomeness):
30/5 = 6
OpenStudy (benlindquist):
ok
OpenStudy (welshfella):
right

thx!
OpenStudy (benlindquist):
yw
OpenStudy (welshfella):
the MAD gives a measure of the spread of the numbers over the mean.
