I have an algebra question! The question is in a file so its below this. (I'll fan and medal.)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and heres the question.

OpenStudy (bobo-i-bo):

And what do you think the answer is and why?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know it has 5 terms, and that the leading coefficient isn't 2. I'm not sure on anything farther than that. @Bobo-i-bo

OpenStudy (mathmale):

There are five statements about this poly, some of which are true and some false. If you'd go through these five statements, one by one, and explain your choice and the reasoning behind it, I'd be glad to respond. Important: You might want to look up "degree of a polynomial" and "order of a polynomial"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

True- the polynomial has 5 terms. False- the leading coefficient is -2 False- the degree of the polynomial is 7 True- the constant term is 4 False- the polynomial is in decreasing degree order @mathmale

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

@daisydallon are you able to determine the leading term, leading coefficient and degree of this polynomial?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jim_thompson5910 I'm trying to, but I'm so confused with the information I'm getting from my research.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do you agree that `-2xy^5` is the same as `-2x^1y^5` ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes. @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

so the degree of `-2x^1y^5` is equal to 6. I added the exponents 1+5 = 6

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

what is the degree of 3x^7 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

7? @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

good, how about the next term

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9 and then 6 and then 1? @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the constant term 4 is really 4x^0. So the degree of the last term is 0

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

-10x^3y^6 has a degree of 9, the largest degree compared to the other monomials. So that means the overall degree of the polynomial is 9 since -10x^3y^6 has the largest degree, this makes -10x^3y^6 the leading term with -10 being the leading coefficient

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it goes- True False True True False? @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

the degree of the polynomial is 9 (not 7)

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

9 is the largest degree of the monomials, which is why it's the overall degree of the polynomial

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright- so True False False True False? Sorry this is taking so long- I want it to be perfect and I want to understand what I'm doing. @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

yep you nailed every true/false correctly

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you so much! I'll medal and fan now. @jim_thompson5910

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

you're welcome
