OpenStudy (alana242):

The dropping of atomic bombs on Japan was necessary. Agree/or disagree. Can someone help with the basic details

OpenStudy (alana242):

I know that the US needed to end the war. However I need more details. Japan did bomb Pearl Harbor. Japan would have probably invaded the US if they had not (more details). Japan was the aggressor (Given a chance to surrender, needs more detail). Japan was already a defeated country

OpenStudy (mathishardforme1234):

Japan's ambassador was willing to keep a secret from the American's about pearl harbors attack. Think of it as your friend is talking to you and knows there's a guy behind you with a knife but he isn't going to warn you.

OpenStudy (mathishardforme1234):

The US needed to end the war with those bombs because if they hadn't Japan was going to control the world. And we only had two atomic bombs but Japan thought we had hundreds more. It's a good thing they surrendered right then and there.

OpenStudy (mathishardforme1234):

Japan would have invaded the US if the US had not acted sooner and did not join the war.

OpenStudy (mathishardforme1234):

I don't think I helped much did I?

OpenStudy (alana242):

Barely but thanks anyway !

OpenStudy (mathishardforme1234):

Okay. Sorry that I didn't help much.

OpenStudy (alana242):

Its fine

No, the war would've eventually ended because the U.S. was making progress with the invasion of the pacific islands. We just did it to 1) end the war earlier, and 2) demonstrate our capabilities. Although it was militarily unnecessary, it did place us as the #1 superpower in the world

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Japan was in fact losing the war. The European part of the war had been ended for a while before the bombs were dropped. The U.S. and it's allies were slowly making their way to the Japanese mainland by island hopping. Most of the land taken was nowhere near as large or as populated as Japan, yet the Allied forces had taken significant casualties. This is due to the Japanese policy of no surrender; they would literally fight until the last man. The estimated casualties of invading Japan were enormous. The bombs were dropped in order to end the war with minimal Allied casualties.

I have a friend who celebrated his 21st birthday at Iwo Jima (yeah, he's and old guy.) It's fascinating to talk with him. He survived Iwo Jima but the fighting was fierce. He lost a lot of friends there. The US lost a lot of men there. The plans were, that his unit and others would prepare for the direct assault of the Japanese mainland. His unit would be one of the first to land. They knew how hard it was to take Iwo Jima and Saipan. Every island closer was tougher than the last. My friend knew that most of his unit would probably be killed. (Think of D-Day with the entire population ready to fight) My friend and his unit, and thousands of other young men didn't die on a beach in Japan. President Truman decided that Japanese industrial cities should be destroyed. President Truman saved my friends life. My friend thinks dropping the bomb was a pretty good decision.
