Could anyone review my essay please

OpenStudy (qwertty123):

Sure! :D

OpenStudy (ishipdestiel):

If they ban books, they might as well lock us away from the world." (Rory Edwards, The ALA) While I understand that those who lobby to have books banned mean well, it is one thing to make that choice for your child, but is it really fair to force your choice on every child? I could understand requiring books to have a rating system much like we have for movies and video games today, but banning any book is denying freedom of speech from the author. An author writes to share a thought, a feeling, and a moment in time, not to have their book censored. According to The American Library Association," Censorship can be subtle, almost imperceptible, as well as blatant and overt, but, nonetheless, harmful." Have we become a society that dictates what we can and cannot read, or do we allow children to learn to think for themselves? An example of this undue censorship occurred when a group of people, tried to have the children’s book Charlotte’s Web banned for religious reasons, according to, commondreams.org “this sort of thing is par for the lunatic small- minded course." Libraries and schools should never ban books just because it is contrary to someone else's opinion of what is appropriate, like books that contain homosexuality, abuse, or mental illness. While some parents may believe that banning these books is protecting their children, another child may be using these books to understand or cope with something in their personal life. Many books in our community fall into this category like And Tango Makes Three by Peter Parnell and Justin Richardson and illustrated by Henry Cole.(1) This children's book was challenged by the community because it tells the story of 2 male penguins that raise a young penguin together but this story could mean the world to a child with two dads. Many books are also banned for religious beliefs or what one reader feels the author may have implied. First off unless an author says "Hail Satan" I don't think anyone should assume that they are trying to get their readers to hail Satan and even then it could be a creative work of fiction!(1) As for religion, you are free to worship whatever God (or no God) that you choose, however you are not free to force you beliefs on anyone else. In short no book should ever be banned for religious reasons. In recent years, many books have been banned for adult content or vulgar vocabulary. While some content and language may not be suited for all ages perhaps a rating system, like we currently have for movies and video games, would be a better alternative than banning the book. The plus side of the rating system is the rating and reasons behind that rating would be clearly labeled on every cover. “I think banning books is a terrible idea, but a content warning on the back I think would empower parents."(1) Allowing parents to decide if they want to let their children read that book without having had to previously read it themselves. “Coyne thinks a rating system on book jackets would help parents decide what's appropriate for their kids to read. It's a subject many are afraid to touch, with the talk of censorship or restricting books conjuring up images of book burnings and infringing on First Amendment Rights.” (2)While I can relate to parents wanting to protect their children from the many dangers in the world today the pleasures of reading and the independent thought that it provokes should be encouraged not restricted. A good book like any other art form can make you laugh, cry, and mourn for the characters. In a world where children are exposed to violence on TV daily what parent wouldn't want their child to learn this emotional empathy, even if it's for a fictional character In conclusion, I think that good intentions are the number one reason why schools and libraries ban books. I believe that if you want to read something it should be your (and your parents) choice to read it and not up to someone who thinks it goes against their beliefs. They are not in control of you, YOU ARE! So while others believe that they are protecting their children, they are also limiting what others can read as well. That may not be your choice you could agree with me or you could go in your own direction. So when someone asks if a book should be banned speak YOUR mind and tell them what you think!

OpenStudy (qwertty123):

o.O That is long! XD I guess I better get reading!

OpenStudy (qwertty123):

I totally agree with you! Nice job too! :3 It is your choice if you want to read a book or not.

OpenStudy (ishipdestiel):

Thanks, no grammar issues or anything, you can find.

OpenStudy (qwertty123):

Not that I can find. You did very great! Though I could have miss some. ;-; That would be my fault.

OpenStudy (ishipdestiel):

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

what grade is this for?

OpenStudy (ishipdestiel):

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

hmm okay. I dont see any grammatical mistakes but for ninth grade this doesnt seem...."right?" i guess? There is just tiny things that were i live isnt up to 9th grade standard

OpenStudy (ishipdestiel):

This is my first draft- and it is definitely different than when I was in public school, but i have to do it like they say or i will get a bad grade

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

how do they say to do it?

OpenStudy (ishipdestiel):

just like weird things like i have to have two quotes for all of my body paragraphs and crazy stuff like that, but could you tell me what needs to be fixed please

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

thats common actually. like: Topic sentence Quote comment comment quote comment comment conclusion?

OpenStudy (ishipdestiel):

at my public school, you would put 2 and 3 max through the entire essay

RhondaSommer (rhondasommer):

Its common where i live. that's how it should be. your public school was teaching you incorrectly. The first thing I notice that isn't right is your first sentence: If they ban books, they might as well lock us away from the world," (Rory Edwards, The ALA). Don't start your paper off with a quote. It looks bad. Start it off professionaly with either 1 a claim or 2 a topic sentence. either is fine.

OpenStudy (ishipdestiel):

if you look up hooks, you will actually see that quotes are commonly used for hooks, which even in my virtual class you dont start off with your claim
