OpenStudy (mathmale):

You want an equation for the cab fare. Let x represent the distance traveled in the cab, in miles. How much must you pay for each mile you ride in the cab? How much will the driver charge you, just for picking y ou up? Can you create an appropriate equation for the total cab fare, using the info about which I've asked you earlier? y=mx+b ...where m is the slope, or the mileage rate, and b is the initial amount charged.

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

y=10x+9.50

OpenStudy (mathmale):

How did you obtain $9.50? Where does that rate $10 come from? Look carefully at the data given in the table.

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

10 is miles driven and 9.50 is the cost to get there

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

@SerenityJustice74

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Unfortunately, your equation does not correspond at all with the data in the table. You must pay an initial fee just to get into the cab (no miles driven). And then you must pay a certain amount per mile that you are driven. Mind starting again? Your equation must have the form y=mx + b, and you should describe the meaning of m, x and b, as well as give the correct values for m and b. x is a variable, and so is y.

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

not at all

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

how do i know what m,x,and b is?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

x is a variable. y is a variable. y represents the total cab fare, that y ou must pay when you get out of the cab. x repres. the number of miles you are driven in the cab. Both m and b are given in the table for 2 different cab companies. you are interested ONLY in the data for one company: Cabs R Us. What is the rate (charge) per mile (m)? What is the upfront charge (b)?

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

well i need both

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, that's right, you need them both. And both are printed in that table. Look at the row for Cabs R Us for this info.

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

boarding is 6$ and .50 for each mile

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes. You pay $6 to board and then you pay $0.50 per mile. These are your slope (m) and y-intercept (b) values. Remember, the variable x, which represent the number of miles you are driven in the cab, must also be part of this equation. Write the equation, please, for Cabs R Us, using the given m and b and the model y=mx+b.

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

y=6x+.50?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Here's what I see: You propose to charge $6 for each mile you are driven in the cab, and it will cost you 50 cents to step into the cab. Is that what you meant?

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

ok wait... y=.50x+6

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Much better. Now, if you'd put in the $ sign where required, you'd be done. y=total cost of cab ride = $0.50x + $6.00.

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

but do i put the sign in when i put it in as the anwser?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

No. Use the equation exactlyl as given. suppose you ride 5 miles in the cab. Wht's the total that this cab ride will cost you?

OpenStudy (devonhoward15):

$2.50

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Is that all? You get into the cab and ride 5 miles in the cab, and only have to pay $2.50?
