Reconstruction was not immediately successful after the Civil War. This Supreme Court Ruling and this Act both are evidence of how long it took to establish civil rights for African Americans. Supreme Court in 1896 case established that as long as facilities were "equal" it was okay to separate public facilities by race. (This was the "law of the land" for 60 years, until it was overturned by another court ruling). is it Plessy vs. Ferguson is it Voting Rights Act of 1965
Plessy v. Ferguson, 163 U.S. 537, was a landmark United States Supreme Court decision upholding the constitutionality of state laws requiring racial segregation in public facilities under the doctrine of "separate but equal"
The Voting Rights Act, signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson (1908-73) on August 6, 1965, aimed to overcome legal barriers at the state and local levels that prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote under the 15th Amendment (1870) to the Constitution of the United States.
