We would first change the denominators in order to add them....we would find a number that has the factors of 12 and 17 which would be 204....so we would multiply each by its opposite...sorry this is the way i was taught... \(\Huge{\frac{5}{12} \times 17 = \frac{85}{204}}\) \(\Huge{\frac{10}{17} \times 12 = \frac{120}{204}}\) \(\Huge{\frac{7}{12} \times 17 = \frac{119}{204}}\) \(\Huge{\frac{7}{17} \times 12 = \frac{84}{204}}\) So we have the equation... \(\huge {18 \frac{85}{204} + 8 \frac{120}{204} + 23 \frac{119}{204} + 28 \frac{84}{204}}\)

563blackghost (563blackghost):

First we would add the fractions... \(\Huge{ \frac{85}{204} + \frac{120}{204} + \frac{119}{204} + \frac{84}{204}}\) When adding fraction the denominator does not change...what would it add up too?

OpenStudy (mrcoolguy):

2

563blackghost (563blackghost):

Correct ^^ Now we add the whole numbers together.. \(\Huge{18+8+23+28+{\color{red}{2}}}\) What would that equal too?

OpenStudy (mrcoolguy):

oh so its D

563blackghost (563blackghost):

Yup ^^

OpenStudy (mrcoolguy):

thanks

563blackghost (563blackghost):
