I need a reason why this question is solved this way!!

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

. After polling a class of 24 students by a show of hands, you find that 9 students play soccer and 21 students play basketball. Given that information, what is the number of students in the class who must play both soccer and basketball?

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

The answer is 30-24=6

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

@Loser66

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

what is 21+9=?

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

yes sp 6 would be correct

OpenStudy (elitedamosh):

Because 21 + 9 is 30, but there are 24 people

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

But why add 21+9?

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

there are 24 students and 9 play soccer and 21 play basketball so 30-24=6

OpenStudy (elitedamosh):

so you have to subtract 30 from 24 which is 6

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

Yes that's an obvious answer but why is it not 9?

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

why would it be nine?

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

If 9 play soccer and 21 play basketball why can't the minimum amount of people who play both be 9?

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

What is the reasoning, instead of saying just subtract/add??

OpenStudy (elitedamosh):

The reasoning is that how do they have 30 results but only have 24 people in the class. That means that some people voted twice so the only way to find out who voted twice is to subtract

OpenStudy (help!!!!):

@elitedamosh People can't explain this simple question... Thanks btw

OpenStudy (elitedamosh):

No problem :)
