OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

subtract? @ijakez

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

@jim_thompson5910

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes! you subtract them!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So you would do 8 - (-3).

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

-11?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well if youre subtracting a negative number, it turns positive.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 8- (-3) turns into 8 +3.

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

so 11

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

You can think of 8-(-3) as you start off with 8 dollars the -3 represents the fact that you're in debt 3 dollars, or you have 3 IOUS taking away 3 IOUs is the same as adding 3 dollars to your pocket so that's why 8-(-3) is the same as 8+3

OpenStudy (volleyballlover55):

ok
