Identify the resulting probability as theoretical or experimental. One-half of the people in a chess club are adults 21 years old or older. The other half are younger. What is the probability that a club member chosen at random will be under 21 years old? A. The experimental probability is 50%. B. The experimental probability is 75%. C. The theoretical probability is 75%. D. The theoretical probability is 50%.

What's the difference between experimental and theoretical?

OpenStudy (yinshy):

no clue

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, you can kinda tell based on the names. And also, remember this! The theoretical probability is the probability of it happening overall in real life. If I flip a coin, the theoretical probability I flip heads is 50%, and the theoretical probability I flip tails is 50%. The experimental probability completely ignores the theoretical probability and it means "within the bounds of the experiment ONLY, this happens this % of times". So if I flip a coin 100 times and it lands on heads 70 times, although the theoretical probability it flips heads is 50%, the EXPERIMENTAL probability (remember, experiment ONLY!) is 70%.

thank you

OpenStudy (yinshy):

i got D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

"One-half of the people in a chess club are adults 21 years old or older. The other half are younger." Is this part an experiment, or is it telling you something that talks about the total? Total, so it's theoretical, D is right!
