OpenStudy (vespersaviour):

What is the value of x? Round your answer to the nearest tenth if necessary.

OpenStudy (vespersaviour):

Its Pythagorean Theroem...I have no clue how to do this..It's confusing me.

OpenStudy (prince1342):

Okay this isnt too hard

OpenStudy (prince1342):

Do you know SOA TOH CAH?

OpenStudy (vespersaviour):

No I don't @Prince1342

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you want me to help explain? The pythagorean theorum is still fresh in my mind seeing as I just learned about it.

OpenStudy (vespersaviour):

It'd be greatly appreciated if you did. Today is my first day of learning it and im confused as ever..

OpenStudy (anonymous):

One moment, let me just review to be sure I have all the terms right.

OpenStudy (vespersaviour):

Ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Just a question, are you in FLVS or VLACS?

OpenStudy (vespersaviour):

I'm in k12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

use this: a2 + b2 = c2 (pretend c is x)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im in k12 too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the number that you don't know is called the hypotenuse. In order to find the hypotenuse in most equations, you need to write out the whole equation first. In this case it is \[5^{2}+8^{2}=\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

At the end of the equation we put \[c ^{2}\] because that is what we are trying to solve, but don't know what it is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

To solve this, we need to first simplify both sides, and since we can't simplify the right side, only the left in this case. That means 25+64=c squared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Add them together to get 89=c squared

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Then finally we find the square root or whatever is the closest of 89, which is 9.4 if rounded to the nearest 10th

OpenStudy (anonymous):

And that's your answer! The hypotenuse is 9.4, and that should be your answer.

OpenStudy (vespersaviour):

Ok! Thanks for explaining! This will help alot in the future.
