Mathematics 20 Online
OpenStudy (marcelie):

Can someone give me advice how to study for math

OpenStudy (deathlynine):

The only advice I have is practice, take notes, or even look up tutorials if you have trouble with the lesson.

OpenStudy (marcelie):

yes thats what i do for calculus 1 and im still struggling though... i get the material but when it comes to the exam i get test anxiety

OpenStudy (deathlynine):

Getting test anxiety is normal. I would say before you take the test, take in deep breathe and remain calm. Or at least try to.

OpenStudy (marcelie):

yes true but i dont know if its that or i dont have time to practice but as i can see i practice and spend more hours on math. so im not sure its the amount of classes that im taking since math is a big load of formulas

OpenStudy (deathlynine):

Are you a online student? Sometime, in many causes like myself, attending multiple classes in one day can stress you out. It can waver the mind a bit.

OpenStudy (marcelie):

well im no im not an online student .. i go to her class on tues/thurs

OpenStudy (deathlynine):

I see. Have you tried studying with groups of friends? Working with more than one individual helps with studying for a exam. I'm in high school so I'm not sure how college works.

OpenStudy (marcelie):

yeh true .. i tried to work with groups but we are in the same position as struggling

OpenStudy (deathlynine):

Have you ask her for tips or maybe email her? (assuming your teacher is a female) Does she tell you what to study for?

OpenStudy (marcelie):

yes shes a female haha. well the problem with her is that she assign us for a chapter review test like 103 questions ! thats technically alot

OpenStudy (marcelie):

ive talked to her but she tells to attend tutoring which i have been attending with them and i still dont see no improvement.. so idk if im the problem or her

OpenStudy (deathlynine):

I believe neither is the problem here, however, if you have issues with her or something. I guess talk to her or report it. As for the test, I believe you be fine. Just study hard and proud. If your having problem with the class, not sure if its optional, but why not take another course?

OpenStudy (marcelie):

well the problem is that i dont want to retake the class since im going to be graduating next spring already

OpenStudy (deathlynine):

Oh.

OpenStudy (marcelie):

yes :/

OpenStudy (deathlynine):

I guess looked up for calculus 1 and boy does that scare me. Here's some tips that may help out. One, work on calculus everyday so you get familiar with the concept or well adapt . Second, try to memorize your assignment or the lesson. Your exam will be a challenge but as long as your takings notes and studying. You will succeed. I wouldn't worried. Just keep cool, be calm, and you will be fine.

OpenStudy (deathlynine):

I have to go. I do hope I help you here but I too need to get back to work. :)

OpenStudy (marcelie):

thanks for the advice :)

rebeccaxhawaii (rebeccaxhawaii):

take lots of notes, if you are having trouble understanding material you must ask questions or that may mess you up later in your course. do not procrastinate because that will just stress you out and make things harder than it actually is.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

"Don't confuse activity with achievement." Don't just spend time in math and expect to do well. Make sure you are studying the right things, spending much time on the topics of great importance. In Calculus, it's the chain rule, without a really strong understanding of the chain rule, everything else falls apart.

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

Some tips I have for studying Calc. 1. It may be tedious and boring, but you have to absolutely do problems everyday. Especially when new material comes up in class that has you confused. 2. As soon as class ends within the hour, if possible, go over the class notes again. I have personally found this helps me to retain the information. 3. Start studying for exams well in advance. It doesn't have to be intense, but just preparing in anyway up to 2 weeks before the test has helped me significantly. 4. If finally your still struggling attend all the office hours. This is just my experience as i'm currently taking college level calc 1.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Test anxiety? Hmm that's tough... I never dealt with that... So I wouldn't know what advice to give :[

OpenStudy (sweetburger):

I absolutely agree with @zepdrix 's points. They are all extremely pertinent.

hartnn (hartnn):

1. Pay full attention in class lecture, and ask even the smallest of the doubts that come to your mind. Make sure you understand the concept. The more you ask, the more you learn! (If your teacher doesn't help much, I suggest you use, OpenStudy, Khan Academy, MathIsFun, etc. etc.) 2. Revise what you have learnt in the class \(\text {within 24 hrs }\) of the lecture. This helps in retaining the concepts in mind for a long time. 3. Practice \(\text{atleast 3}\) problems of the same type. If you've done this, your test anxiety will vanish like it never existed! :)

OpenStudy (marcelie):

Oh okay then ill try that then

OpenStudy (baru):

if you have test anxiety, write a LOT of TIMED practice tests! its not that you need to solve problems blazing fast, you just have to start feeling comfortable with being timed. the anxiety of the clocking ticking during an exam is what chokes a lot of students.
