Can anyone explain this to me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

any ideas?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not really, I'm extremely confused by this question

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

S = 6 cm^2 means you can replace S in the formula with 6. Then solve for the length a(cm)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm still so confused and I don't know why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My answers are 1 cm, 2 cm, 1/6 cm, and 3 cm but I don't know how to get any of those

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

$$\Huge S = 6a^2$$ $$\huge S=6$$ $$\Huge 6 = 6a^2$$ ok, so far?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

S = 6 means S is 6cm or you can substitute 6 for S.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I get 216. Is that correct or no? I feel like that's wrong??

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

It is not correct. Do you understand what I did above?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, not really. Sorry, I'm really horrible at this.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

$$\Huge S =6a^2$$ This^ is a given formula. Right?

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

By "given" I mean it is in the question statement and we need to accept it to answer the the question :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ah, yeah.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got 1 cm. Is that correct? (I got 1 because I just realized that it probably makes the most sense)

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Yes, that is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you for trying to help me. I need to work on this more. I've noticed that my school doesn't explain stuff very well.

OpenStudy (skullpatrol):

Thanks for trying to learn :-)
