Song writing tips?
I pretty much fail at writing songs. I'm more into indie (mumford and sons, lumineers, daughter, etc.) Tips?
Do you know the basics of writing a song? What it should consist of?
In all honesty, not a clue. i've tried to learn but it's so difficult for me. I love music though and I would love to start singing and I am willing to learn! <3 @kelsey.benton00
Well, so the most basic song can look something like this: Verse 1 Verse 2 Chorus Verse 3 Verse 4 Chorus Bridge Outro (Typically another chorus) That said, once you understand that, you can take it and swap it up a bit, modify it to suit whatever song you're trying to write, or whatever message you're trying to get across. It all comes with practice. Typically, the chorus stays the same throughout the song, just repeats. The verses are what change. However, you want to make sure that the whole song maintains the same theme, understand? You don't want one verse to be about one thing and the next verse to be about something entirely different. Do you have any specific questions regarding songwriting?
Nope, thank you. @kelsey.benton00
Glad to help :p
I’m going to use an analogy. Song writing is like turning on a faucet to get water. Sometimes as soon as you turn it on there is great water. Other times there is a lot of crap that you have to get out of the way. Wait for the bad water to come out, and as a result there will be good water after that. Also don’t over think, sometimes simplicity is the key, if you actually sit down and listen to lyrics of popular songs they are quite simple.
but then again, you also don't have to follow the rules of songwriting. Rules were made to be broken. For example.. everyone says you MUSt have a bridge.. But I have written over 10 songs without bridges. Just relax, close your eyes.. and something should come up.
My advice in regards to this, is to NOT have the goal of popularity. What I mean, is that so many songs sound alike, the themes are written alike, and the progressions are alike as well. Focus on being original, and don't strangle what cannot be forced out of yourself. Sometimes lyrics are going to come to you randomly, where you rush for pencil and paper. Sometimes you might be fooling around on the piano, guitar, harmonica....or any type of instrument and suddenly a melody will come out of nowhere. And then there will be times where you don't know which spots to apply the lyrical parts, and the instrumental parts, and the singing parts. Its all part of a process of growing, learning, and writing musically. Take your time, take it slow, and don't rush. Better results come from the one who is patient :)
