Hey guys! What are some of your opinions on Homeland Security? I have to do a report on one of the following: -Discuss the need for the DHS. -Discuss the importance of protecting individuals' Constitutional freedoms. -Discuss how the DHS can best do its job of protecting the American people without infringing the rights of the people. Where or how do we "draw the line" between security and rights? I don't know what my opinion is yet on DHS. Some people are all for everything it does. Others are against it due to "governmental secrecy", etc. Thoughts?

OpenStudy (queenof17):

I've been on plenty of websites telling me the pros and cons, but I'm really interested to know your personal opinions.

OpenStudy (philcua):

i dont understand ur question so do u want our opinions?

OpenStudy (queenof17):

@philcua Yes.

I feel that our government tapping into our phonelines is not how you get your citizens to trust you as well as make them feel safe.

OpenStudy (zaraxx):

wiretaps are very easy to obtain and while i understand the need, there's definitely too much wiggle room for the DHS. i think looking at McCarthyism is also a really great idea, its basically the practice of making accusations and using questionable (often times bordering on illegal) tactics to gain "intel". the point of history is to learn from our mistakes and this, in my opinion, is the perfect example. what happened in the 1950's (using fear as a tactic to gain public support in violating their civil freedoms) is eerily similar to what has happened since 9/11 and what's happening now. got a little ranty here but hope i helped show another side of the topic !! its definitely something interesting to write about bc u can really understand both sides. good luck!

OpenStudy (queenof17):

that was so helpful, thank you so much for writing that!!!

OpenStudy (zaraxx):

sorry i didn't see this but ur very welcome im glad i could help!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think really when the term "DHS" is used, it can be too broad. The Department of Homeland Security is one of the broader departments in the US Government

OpenStudy (badbxtch):

One of the real problems in homeland security is the lack of technical safety, the government doesn't realize how powerful technology is.. it could rule a country for god sakes!
