Another friendly reminder for all of you guys! Here are some things I wanted to point out for you guys! 1.) When welcoming a new user to OS in the feedback section or whatever, do not just shove the Code of Conduct down their throats or send them a huge latex filled message saying like oh heres a tutorial, here are awesome users, etc. Preferably, just welcome them, try to help them with their question even if its in the wrong section! Then tell them "For future reference" that it is in the wrong section and that there are experts in different sections that will be better to assist them! 2.) Also Do not be so straight forward with the rules, they may not want to follow them if you are so direct and sometimes a little rude while saying them, be nice and compassionate to them while telling them of the rules, and do not force them to read the code of conduct, let them know nicely, think of it as if u just joined, how would u like to be informed about it
... but if they are in the wrong section and the ask a question that i have no idea how to help all i can do is welcome them and tell them where to post questions.
yup u can do that, and u can also tell them that they can tag users with @ < username here so they get a notification
and be sure to provide them with the link to the correct section, they may not know how to find it, and explaining it is sometimes difficult to understand
+1 thanks for the tips. will use them ^-^
Users should read the CoC when they create an account though. e.e
^^^
but all of us know that most of them don't @Elsa213 @Hayhayz
keep in mind, these are just relative things that we are trying to change that will make their first experience more appealing, alot of times, new users are left hanging, and if u were new to a website, u wouldn't like that would u?
Exactly.... but it is mandatory >.>
although that is true elsie, the reality is that 99/100 will actually sit down and look at it. i was guilty of this. although many clicked terms and conditions without reading all of it sometimes. we all all guilty of it at one point or another. but puppies has made a great point about being compassionate and reminding them nicely. it would be way more effective if we tell them nicely like "hey could you please explain how you got that answer so the person with the question has a better understanding" instead of "do NOT give direct answers" because that may catch them a bit off guard and they may find it pretty rude that we stated it like that. which dont get me wrong i have totally done that before. but this is just something we can all work on.
I know for a fact that none of us read the CoC when we first made the account @Elsa213
I read the CoC though. ;-;
I do what you said @rebeccaxhawaii but in other subjects like English. I don't know how to help the user on their question 99% of the time when they post in feedback section so i think i will just continue to do my welcoming and direct them to the correct subject.
elsie thats great but we have to remember that most will not read it. so we just have to give them a friendly reminder. they are new and still getting used to everything.
it should look something like this Hello There! Welcome to Openstudy!! For future reference this is in the wrong section and you would likely to get more help in the Math section! If you don’t receive help just tag someone with @ < username here, and they will get a notification! http://openstudy.com/study#/groups/Mathematics @Hayhayz big old latex things may not always be the best way to do it, huge long messages like the ones @SamsungFanBoy or whoever they use, most new users won't bother to read it
yes i dont see the problem there bb. @Hayhayz but for example my message that i would use. it wasnt that great 1) because i was just welcoming them and totally ignoring their question, which by no means was my intention. so @ILovePuppiesLol has made a great post to make everyone more aware
But Latex would get the users attention....
Ive told you about users not reading your long messages in the past harry ><
2) because the message is quite long sometimes so they are bombarded with a lot of information when they are only just trying to get their questions answered
yes and i learned :) So i changed my ways @Hayhayz
Yes, even with tutorials, many new users are just here because they have some questions in math or something, not many will read huge tutorials, and then long directions on whatever whatever
pups is just making suggestions how we can welcome others better.
because when i think back to when i was just starting, everything was new and i had no idea what anything was. i could barely get to my own question without getting lost. so when we are sending them different tutorials and postings it probably overwhelms them. when they are just trying to get a question answers. but cant because we send the a welcome message then ignore their question. which if i were new i would be like "wow so they welcome me but ignoring my question". i dont think we are aware of what it looks like in their eyes. because that one welcome message will get 5-6 medals yet the person with the question has still not gotten helped yet. although we know that is not our intention
he is making a helpful suggestion @okdutchman7
we direct them to the correct section where they can post it again and get help
no hayz im not talkin about your postings
yes but a lot of times the messages that u post
are the ones that we are trying to change
what?
we aren't trying to change the concept of directing them to the correct section, just be a little more considerate while doing so
I feel like I was the only person who, when I first joined OS, knew exactly what they were doing when it came to navigating and answering questions ;P But not all people are like that, so I s'pose it's best to welcome them, invite them to read the CoC and TaC, and then help them in figuring out their question.
the tone/way of how we do it, is what we are trying to change
"but cant because we send the a welcome message then ignore their question." i was referring to this.
there is no need to make them read CoC and TaC because if their purpose was to troll, they will troll anyways, alot of times, the best ways to educate them on rules is for them to make the mistake and learn from their mistakes..
sorry let me rephrase that
I do that all the time. I am nice. :)
I love that OpenStudy is making the world one big study group. OpenStudy is peer-to-peer education -- powered by us! what a great mission to follow.
what i meant what that there are some users that make a long overwhelming message but yet ignore the users question
glad you like it here :) @booknerd1234 hope u stay for good times <3
Sometimes the issue with helping the user with their question that's, for example, about English, but they posted it in the OS Feedback section, that if you helped them with it, and then tried to redirect them to the correct section, they will continue to post it in the OS Feedback section because they know they'll get help right away because you're there.
yes u are @jabez177 <3
@YoungStudier exactly
thats why sometimes if u don't know what to do, u can post with this message For future reference this is in the wrong section and you would likely to get more help in the Math section! If you don’t receive help just tag someone with @ < username here, and they will get a notification!
exactly @YoungStudier
thanks puppies
just be patient and let them know again.. @YoungStudier
we should help them first then redirect them for future reference
That's what I do @ILovePuppiesLol but 99.99% they ignore it and continue posting it in the wrong section anyways.
^
^^^ true
very true i fell like i was on the site for ever even though i joined yestarday
PM them @YoungStudier
Again with they don't like to listen.....
i have never had that happen to me
well we shall keep encouraging them to post in the right section. just because they continue to do it doesnt mean we have to give up.
exactly @rebeccaxhawaii
you guys can either keep trying to find flaws in what we are trying to do here or you can help everyone have a better experience by trying to change, just because you think its right doesn't mean it is the best way to do it
for example if someone were to be giving direct answers would we continue to let them do so? or would something be done about it?
Some users do post in the correct section but never get help....
this principle was suggested by @jigglypuff314 and I am the one to spread it
thats why we tell them, that we can "tag users" we are all volunteers on this website @Elsa213
Users don't like being tagged though e.e
Some users*
then they can ignore the notification or change their notification settings
@ILovePuppiesLol I s'pose my question is what order do you want us to do? Like, do you want us to help the user with their question and then tell them the rules or what? Because, I don't know if you've had to deal with it, but new users tend to lose interest and not really care what you say after their question has been answered.
^^ Mhm
you can have a message saved for that
you can say I will help you with ur question! But for future reference remember blah blah blah
and then help them with their question
well we should do both in a nice welcoming tone. but the thing is, is that there are some that just make a huge welcoming post. yet ignore the users question
If that happens continuously, @YoungStudier, then simply report the user and a Moderator will take care of it. That is what they are there for. We are normal users so we're not meant to take those matters into our own hands. Call a mod! :D
yup, that is why moderators are there xD
Righto Magnus @jabez177 ;P
exactly what steven said but just because someone continues to do something they arent supposed to, does that mean that we drop it and let it continue. or do we keep reminding and encouraging to do the right thing
Moderators have important things to do though.
That awkward moment when your OS glitches and reposts something you already said..
that is true elsie but they took the duty of being a mod. jiggly does a great job of that. she will handle the reports as always
You have successfully let all the users know to TAG Jiggly in posts like that. She has more obligations now... D: :P
But moderators have so much work to do...
yes they do, but at the end of the day, most of the reports are still taken care of
well this was a suggestion from jiggly. the gist of it was just to be welcoming and answer the users question. not welcome them but ignore the question
I think it's easier to avoid new users then. e.e
okay elsa if you wish. i just agree with jig and pups and thought it was a good suggestion.
If we avoid new users all together, then that means no one will help them with their question thus leading to the fact that we could be losing potential helpers and positive contributors to the site... :/
I mean, why stay if no one is going to look at your question just cuz you're a newbie?
i dont think elsa is being serious
i won't ignore new users..
me either ^^
elsa, ambassadors are supposed to help new users @Elsa213
Ambassadors are supposed to welcome them....
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
no one ever welcomed me
elsa all we are saying is, welcoming is totally fine. but the users that welcome but avoid the question all together, that is a no no
welcome to open study :) Hope u enjoy ur time here @booknerd1234
How are you going to tell new users they can't post tests?
