OpenStudy (asiannerd):

The function f(x)=(a^x)+4 will never cross the x-axis. A. True B. False

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

That depends on the value of a.

OpenStudy (asiannerd):

It does not give a value, so what do I do?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

Maybe look in your book. Often they define a positive non 1 for these sections and then talk about reflections. i.e. my guess is that a is assumed to be a positive number not equal to 1.

OpenStudy (asiannerd):

What would you say the answer is?

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

Well. If we assume that a is positive. If we multiply a positive number by itself any amount of times we want, will it ever be negative or 0?

OpenStudy (asiannerd):

It will still be positive

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

ok and then you add 4 to that number.

OpenStudy (zzr0ck3r):

so the thing is always positive.

OpenStudy (asiannerd):

Oh ok so it would be true

OpenStudy (perl):

The base of an exponential function is usually defined to be positive. The graph of an exponential function with a negative base is severely discontinuous. https://www.desmos.com/calculator/gogrn8gg1o
