Ping is deciding what to choose for dinner from a menu. He can choose 1 of 3 pasta meals, 1 of 7 chicken meals, or 1 of 3 fish meals. How many ways can Ping choose a dinner meal? My answer was 63, but it was wrong

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

He can choose 1 of 3 pasta meals, 1 of 7 chicken meals, *or* 1 of 3 fish meals 63 would be correct if he could pick one of each, but he can't. It's poorly worded. I assume he can pick 1 pasta, and then either 1 chicken or 1 fish.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

It could also be that he can only pick one item and that's it

OpenStudy (gm100299):

the options are: 63 13 3 30

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

That doesn't narrow things down, regarding the wording... both possibilities I mentioned are there

OpenStudy (gm100299):

Thank you for your help. I think the wording is poor or the quiz is marking it wrong (wouldn't be the first time) cause I think the answer is 63 even if it was marked wrong. I'm going to ask my teacher for better clarification tomorrow.

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

It's a really awful question... it looks like it should be 63 at first glance. That 'or' really screws things up.

OpenStudy (gm100299):

Update** My teacher said to use the addition counting principle ("or" is the key word) So 3 +7+3 = 13

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

It should've been clearer about that " He can choose 1 of 3 pasta meals, OR 1 of 7 chicken meals, or 1 of 3 fish meals."
